Under the Green Schools Program we help schools to implement environmental education programme that encompass school environmental sustainability projects and practical actions. These projects and actions are aimed at solving environmental problems, creating awareness, promoting hands-on, experiential learning (thereby developing all learning domains), generating income (hence imparting entrepreneurial skills) and complementing and reinforcing classroom learning by enriching the existing topics (that have otherwise been covered theoretically) with practical components.
Such practical learning in real world helps students to address important general educational objectives related to values and skills development.
We promote project-based learning as a strategy to simultaneously create environmental awareness, solve environmental problems and promote hands on learning. The program is carefully integrated with school learning objectives.
i) The goal is for students to learn by doing. Students tend to understand best when they are fully engaged – their Head (mind), Heart (emotions) and Hands (body): Tell me, I’ll forget; Show me, I’ll remember; Involve me, I’ll understand.
ii) Project-Based Learning enhancesc4 critical thinking, problem solving and effective decision making skills.
iii) Inspire teachers and students to take personal responsibility for improving the environment in school, at home and in the community in general.
iv) Students put knowledge gained in class into practice.
v) Students and teachers transform their school into Green School – an ecologically sustainable school that focuses on sustainability education for young students.
vi) Students are involved in a real-world project to enhance their school environment.
vii) It is participatory and learner-centred.
viii) Enhances teamwork, confidence and communication skills.
"The Green Schools Programme provides a blueprint for schools to teach, learn, and engage together in creating a more green and healthy learning environment at their school. It combines environmental education, service learning, and leadership opportunities for students to help turn their school into a model green school."
Studies show that when integrated into the school curriculum or used as an integrating theme across the curriculum, environmental education increases student engagement in learning, improves student achievement, raises test scores and increases students’ knowledge, reasoning and academic skills.
